The truth about single-sex spaces in the NHS

NHS wards and staff accommodation aren’t single sex – and haven’t been since at least 2009. The Department of Health said it had eliminated mixed-sex accommodation. But by 2009, its own guidance said that trans people could choose whichever ward they preferred, regardless of their biological sex. Worse, the guidance said that this didn’t count as a breach of the mixed sex accommodation guidance, and didn’t need to be reported. 

This map contains NHS policies which were current between July 2024 and July 2025.

Recent Freedom of Information (FOI) searches indicate that the NHS is still operating unlawful policy as of April 2026. Updated policies will be added to the map if/when received in due course.
